The Hoeven family established the Hoeven Scholarship Fund in 1984 to honor
James Abbott Hoeven Jr., fondly known as “Chip”, who at the time of his
death was a Colorado State graduate student at the College of Business. Chip
grew up in Fort Collins as was a 1979 graduate of Poudre High School and
later of Colorado College. Recognition of James Sr., a professor of the
Department of Finance at Colorado State, was added to the scholarship after
his death in 1996. Dr. Hoeven obtained his doctorate in Economics at
Colorado State. He then taught business finance for 20 years. Jim will
always be remembered most for his passion for the classroom and interaction
with students. Prior to his teaching career, he was a jet fighter pilot in
the US Air Force and graduated from Dartmouth College and Harvard Business
School. Both Jim and Chip loved the game of golf.
